Kitchen Color Diagnosis

This kitchen was customized and personalized in a fun whimsical way with custom hardware, custom cabintes, and a custom paint job. But when one goes outside of the box with paint color, one takes a risk of having fun, retro whimsy design turn into hues gone wild.

At a first glance it seemed that the red accents, which the client loved, stole the show a bit too much.

I was lucky enough to be asked to give a color diagnosis and my opinion about what I would do. Upon closer look, it wasn't so much the red accents, as much as the yellow walls. Here is how I would turn wild back to whimsy with a cool vibe with Devine Piping or Gosling on the walls and Devine Latte or Crunch on the ceiling.

Colorful Bottom, or no Bottom?

When it comes to wainscoting the question I always get asked is, "do we want a different bottom, or not?" I treat each room, each home, like an individual. It's up to you. Splitting a room in thirds with different colors and having it turn out stylish not predictable, fun and not wild, is tricky. There are many reasons why we to have a different color at the bottom of a wainscoting. The furniture in the room and the personality of the room has a lot to do with it. I often include trim color as a catalyst of what can make or break a room. What's your take on these choices?

Painted Ceilings Standing the Test of Time

As always, it is my pleasure to come back and see a home I recommended colors for in past years. This time I was there for a master bedroom remodel and kid’s bathrooms. It was fun to work with the kids. They were babies last time I saw them. I find pleasure in helping them articulate and create a vision for their space that makes them feel accomplished in the art of color. I feel the same about the grownups I work with. Here is what I did several years ago that the grownups are still crazy about today…living la vida in color!

Devine Exterior Diagnosis

It is soooo when someone says to me, "I want to go big or go home on my exterior colors" but I am afraid I will make a mistake. I get it. An outside mistake is a public one! While there are tons of options for this home, the home owner asked if Devine Shantung would be too much...I say you can never have too much of a good thing if it's beautiful. She mentioned her roof was going to be changed to a dark color, so I took the liberty to diagnose the home and dish out my advise:

Before: Light gray roof, light gray body. While this is nice, it makes the home feel less personal, or less interesting. The question is: do you want to be interesting inside and out? I think so!

Option A: Devine Buffalo, Lario, or Fog Body with Devine Shantung or Goslin door, garage, and trim. What I like about this is how it pops the green landscape and makes the entry points to the home interesting.

Option B: A warmer version of Option A with colors like Devine Impala or Cafe. Option to restain door in a rich wood color.

Option C: A lighter version of Option B: Body in Devine Muslin, Filbert, Sumatra.

Option D: A reverse version of Option A. Lots of door options, really! I can imagine a red door on this one like Devine Sangria...

Option E: Devine Shantung or Goslin Body with Devine Penguin or Piping...

Testing Wall Color with a Mini Paint Pouch
